Exactly solvable spin-orbital model in one dimension    [PDF]

A Kugel-Khomskii model of spin-1/2 spins and pseudospin-1/2 orbitals with nearest-neighbor coupling is solved exactly by means of a non-local unitary transformation. This transformation completely separates the spins from the orbitals in such a way that the spins become paramagnetic while the orbitals form an XXZ Heisenberg chain. The nature of the correlations is discussed. The usefulness of this problem to Sr$_2$CuO$_3$ is also commented upon.
